Republican Generic Ballot Lead Up to 5 Points

October 20, 2009steve vaillancourt

For those of us who await the latest generic ballot results from Rasmussen each week, the news is good today.  The Republican lead, which was two points last week and four points two weeks ago, is up to five points.  42 percent say they would vote for an unnamed Republican for Congress to only 37 percent for an unnamed Democrat.

This is the widest margin Republicans have enjoyed since it was up to  seven points briefly, 44-37, back in early September, in the pre “you lie” days.

A backlash from that comment hurt Republicans, but it seems the numbers are now firming on the plus side again.

This comes at the same time Obama’s strongly favor/strongly disfavor numbers are at an all-time low, 28 vs. 40 for a minus 12.

Overall, it’s 47 percent favorable and 52 percent unfavorable, for a minus 5.

If these numbers hold for another week, look for Republicans to win the Virginia governorship although Rasmussen has the Christie’s GOP lead down to two points in New Jersey with the independent coming on strongly.

As always, details are available at rasmussenreports.com.  Rasmussen polls likely voters.

Zogby’s latest numbers are also bad news for Obama.  A month ago, Zogby had Obama up five points in favorability, 52-47.  Today, it’s fallen into the negative column again, 49-51, a minus two.

Let’s see if other national polls track this trend.
