NRCC for Bass?

October 23, 2009Matt Suermann

All summer we heard the back and forth about the perceived support of the NRSC for former Attorney General Kelly Ayotte. The UL and NHGOP Chairman John H. Sununu both fired shots across the bow of both Team Ayotte and the NRSC, essentially saying it would be in the best interest of the NRSC to not meddle in NH’s Primary process.

Well, our friends over at NowHampshire have a little nugget that should have Teams Giuda and Horn scratching their heads about how the NRCC might be involved in the CD-2 race now the former Rep. Charlie Bass is considering a run. Here is what the NRCC said in a recent email touting candidate recruitment:

Who will step up to the plate? Well, we’ve had incredible success in recruiting some of the best candidates we’ve seen in a long time, including former Rep. Charlie Bass (NH-01); state senator Robert Hurt (VA-05); Greg Newman, the mayor of Hendersonville, North Carolina (NC-11); state representative Scott Bruun (OR-05); and former state senator Joe Heck (NV-03). It’s no secret that these individuals come from heated battleground states, and their victories could represent significant turning points — both literally and figuratively — for our party.

So, where does this imply an endorsement of a candidate that has not indicated he will enter the race even or trying to prop up their recruitment thus far?  I would be interested to hear what Bass has to say and what Horn is thinking about this move.

According to the post on NowHampshire the NRCC said the following regarding the email, “The NRCC says the e-mail does not represent an endorsement of Bass.”  Still interesting to see what the party bosses in DC are thinking when it comes to NH candidates and throwing their support, perceived or real, behind candidates.

I wouldn’t read too much into it. Whoever wrote that email for the NRCC obviously didn’t know enough about the race to get the District right. They see recruiting Charlie Bass as a strong candidate, and he is. Sure, he lost in 2004, but he’s also 6-1 in that district.

I’m sure John Boehner will say some nice things about Charlie when he comes up for a fundraiser next month. But that has more to do with serving with him than any endorsement. I doubt the NRCC could do much to influence our primary even if they tried. In fact, whenever the DC committees from either party decide to have opinions on our primaries, I prefer to simply pat them on the head and send them on their way. They are free to have their opinions; I just don’t care.
