Raising the debt ceiling used to be a routine housekeeping measure. It only recently became a partisan issue.

Even though increased borrowing is not desirable, the consequences of NOT raising he debt ceiling could be catastrophic. The federal government would default on its existing debts because they couldn't roll them over, and financial chaos would ensue. Yes, that chaos could be blamed on the Democrats, but even Republicans would be adversely effected.

Once the filing period ends (June 02 - 11, 2010) and the slate is solidified, debates will ensue.
Until then, candidates are busy getting their name out and refining their message.

The similarity of these comments points to the need for an open, public debate between the candidates. The sooner, the better.
