CSP Town Hall Venue FAIL

August 24, 2009Matt Suermann

As noted here on Red Hampshire via NHpoliticalreport.com earlier today, CSP has finally announced the venue choices for her town hall meetings in Portsmouth and Manchester, the federal buildings.  The Portsmouth Herald has the following nugget regarding the venue size:

An estimated 100 people will be able to fit into the room at the Thomas J. McIntyre Federal Building where the meeting will be held. An aide said that attendance will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Yes, that’s right, she’s booked a room that fits 100 people.  So, assuming that the Manchester federal building will fit the same amount of people as Portsmouth’s, that means that she will only be able to have 200 constituents attend her long awaited town hall meetings.  200 out of some 350,000 registered voters who live in the 1st Congressional District will have the privilege of hearing CSP answer the hard questions that will be posed to her by that select group.

The fact that she has chosen two venues with considerable size restrictions, should make it clear how serious she is about meeting with constituents in the 1st Congressional District: not very.  While I applaud her for planning these town hall meetings, she has also failed in the sense that she has severely limited the number of people that will be able to meet with her in an open setting.

The right thing to do would have been to is choose a venue that is more accessible to her constituents and plan accordingly for the number of interested constituents that will most likely be attending.  I’m sure that the main purpose behind the small venue is to attempt to pack the room with friendly questioners.  I have an odd feeling that plan will backfire.
