Great article in the Laconia Daily Sun this morning on the state’s continued efforts to confiscate the JUA Surplus. Reporter Michael Kitch writes that the AG’s office is again representing the JUA Board, even though a Superior Court found a conflict of interest.
The LDS has been kind enough to let us archive their JUA coverage, since their website lacks permalinks. I’ve posted today’s story over at NH Watchdog.
If you want to know how much we’re borrowing to “balance” the New Hampshire budget, check out our latest report “Mortgaging the Future” over at the Josiah Bartlett Center for Public Policy.

Today, we mark the 40th Earth Day by celebrating the greatest environmental program in the history of the world: free market capitalism. Prosperity and property rights lead us to value and protect natural resources. Socialism devalues common goods, and leads to pollution and exhaustion of resources. Compare our environment with that of China or the former Soviet Union.
With a day of reflection behind us, let’s take a second look at Rep. Fran Wendelboe’s idea to give state government up to $25 million from the Joint Underwriting Association. In case you were wintering in Florida, the Supreme Court has ruled that Governor Lynch had no authority to raid the JUA’s accounts, since state taxpayers never contributed to the fund, and were not on the hook if insurance claims exceeded what was available. The Court affirmed the property rights of the policy holders to any surplus, but Lynch has steadfastly refused to let his Insurance Commissioner distribute the surplus to policy holders as he plots for another way to steal their money.
Rep. Wendelboe has talked to Lakes Region General Hospital, the lead plaintiff in the JUA Lawsuit, and proposed a “compromise” where the state would belatedly release up to $75 million from the fund not needed to pay anticipated claims, but only if it could receive $25 million.

(CONCORD) State Representative Fran Wendelboe (R-New Hampton) is proposing a second attempt to use surplus funds from the Joint Underwriting Association to balance the state budget. Wendelboe presented the plan as an amendment to SB 450 at a hearing of the House Finance Committee this morning.
Frank Guinta has launched a major initiative on his new campaign website, “Your Voice, Your House.”
I’m sure most Republican candidates will be putting out Tax Day statements today, and I’m sure most will say the right things. Rich Ashooh showed a nimble use of campaign resources by putting out a quick, simple, and effective web video instead.
I’m told that Kathy Sullivan just finished a conference call with reporters demanding that New Hampshire Republican denounce the Tea Party and its “hate speech”. What nonsense. First of all, Sullivan was actively cheering on the radical anti-war protesters who displayed far more hateful and violent imagery than anything you’ll see at a Tea Party.
